The expression emerged c. 2011 from a sarcastic Internet meme. Users would assert that they watched a particular work of fiction for the plot, typically while displaying a risqué or questionable image from said work. The meme was originally and especially associated with the television series My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. An image macro would feature a character from the programme accompanied by the text I watch it for the plot or I watch My Little Pony for the plot. The humour relied entirely on the transparent falsehood of the claim.
