## Meaning

Used to say that something happens even though something else might have stopped it — regardless of it. It means much the same as "despite". "They went hiking in spite of the rain."

## Examples

- We enjoyed the picnic in spite of the wind.
- In spite of her fear of heights, Nadia climbed to the top of the tower to see the view.
- In spite of repeated warnings from the coast guard, the surfers paddled out into waves that had already injured two people that morning.
