## Definition

located at or moving toward the bottom of a structure, away from the top or tip. It is mostly used by scientists to describe parts of plants or small sea animals.

For teachers: situated at or directed toward the base, away from the apex. Primarily utilized in botanical and zoological contexts to describe orientation relative to the highest point of an organism.

## Examples

- The researchers examined the abapical part of the shell.
- In certain species of snails, the coloration becomes significantly darker toward the abapical end of the spiral.
