## Definition

in a way that shows you feel very humble or ashamed. You act like this when you want to show someone that you are lower or less important than they are.

For teachers: in a manner that demonstrates extreme humility, degradation, or a lowered status. Often used to describe behavior that is submissive or apologetic to an excessive degree.

## Examples

- He apologized abasedly for his mistake.
- The servant bowed abasedly before the king, hoping to avoid punishment for his late arrival.
- The disgraced official spoke abasedly during the hearing, attempting to regain some measure of public sympathy through a display of total contrition and self-criticism.

## Usage notes

- Typically follows the verb it modifies or appears at the end of the clause.
