## Definition

a medical procedure where a doctor uses a needle to remove fluid from the space around the stomach. It helps doctors check for infections or other health problems.

For teachers: the surgical puncture of the peritoneal cavity to withdraw fluid for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. Often performed to relieve pressure or to analyze the composition of ascitic fluid.
