## Definition

to make a book or a piece of information shorter by removing parts that are not necessary. You do this to make it easier to read or understand.

For teachers: to shorten a text or document by omitting less essential details or sections. Transitive — requires a direct object representing the material being condensed.

## Examples

- The editor abridged the long novel into a shorter version.
- To save space in the final report, the researchers abridged the technical appendices to focus on the main findings.
- While the original manuscript was intended for academic publication, the author abridged the final chapters to ensure the general public could grasp the core argument without specialized knowledge.
