## Definition

a small, extinct animal that lived in Australia. It looked like a small kangaroo and lived in the forests many thousands of years ago.

For teachers: an extinct genus of small, forest-dwelling marsupials from the family Macropodidae. Fossil evidence suggests these animals were arboreal and inhabited the woodlands of Pleistocene Australia.

## Examples

- Scientists found the bones of an abrocome in the cave.
- The discovery of an abrocome skull provided new evidence about the diversity of small marsupials in prehistoric Australia.
- While modern kangaroos are adapted for open grasslands, the abrocome represents a lineage that evolved to thrive in the dense, humid environments of ancient Australian forests.
