## Definition

more sudden or more severe than something else. You use this to describe a change or an action that happens very quickly and without warning.

For teachers: more sudden, severe, or harsh in nature than another instance. Often used to describe a change in tone, a physical impact, or a transition between states.

## Examples

- The second storm was much more abrupt than the first.
- The manager's abrupter response to the mistake made the employee feel even more embarrassed.
- While the initial decline in sales was gradual, the subsequent drop was abrupter, catching the board completely off guard and forcing an emergency meeting.
