## Definition

a person who has finished a course of study at a university or college. This is an old-fashioned word that you will mostly see in history books.

For teachers: a graduate or person who has completed a course of study at a university or college. Archaic in modern usage; primarily found in historical or legal contexts.

## Examples

- The absolvent received his degree at the graduation ceremony.
- The university records listed every absolvent who had graduated from the law school during the previous decade.
- In the eighteenth century, an absolvent was expected to demonstrate a high level of classical scholarship before being granted the right to teach at a higher institution.
