## Definition

in a way that shows you are not paying full attention to what is happening around you. You use this when someone is thinking about something else and not being present in the moment.

For teachers: in a manner that indicates a lack of full attention to the present environment or task. Often used to describe a state of deep thought or distraction.

## Examples

- He looked at the painting abstractedly while thinking about his work.
- She walked through the crowded street abstractedly, her mind focused entirely on the upcoming meeting.
- The professor spoke abstractedly about the theory, his eyes occasionally drifting toward the window as if he were already elsewhere in his mind.
