## Definition

a group of people who study or teach a specific subject, or a place where they do this. It is an older word for an academy or a university.

For teachers: an association of scholars or a learned society, or a specific institution of higher learning. Often used in historical or Italian contexts to refer to a university or a society of artists and scientists.
