## Definition

to light a fire or a lamp. This is an old word that people do not use in modern English.

For teachers: to light or set on fire; to kindle.

## Examples

- The servant was ordered to accend the candles in the hall.
- In the old play, the stage directions instructed the crew to accend the torches as the villain entered the room.
- The poet describes the sun as a celestial body that accends at dawn, casting its first rays upon the sleeping valley to awaken the inhabitants.
