## Definition

to do a particular job or have a specific purpose for a short time.

For teachers: to perform the function of a specified role or object; often used when the subject is not primarily designed for that purpose.

## Examples

- This sofa can act as a bed for guests.
- During the meeting, the vice president had to act as chairman because the boss was ill.
- The local library often acts as a community hub where residents can access essential social services and educational resources.

## Pitfalls

- Not "He acts as of the manager." but "He acts as the manager." — the preposition 'as' is followed directly by the noun phrase without 'of'.

## Usage notes

- usually followed by a noun phrase describing a role, function, or profession.
- Teaching tip: contrast with 'serve as' which is more formal; 'act as' often implies a temporary or substitute role rather than a permanent one.
