Updated: 2026-04-24

## Definition

to say yes to a suggestion, plan, or request made by someone else.

For teachers: to give formal or informal consent to a proposal, condition, or course of action.

## Examples

- They finally agree to the new contract.
- After hours of negotiation, the manager agreed to give the staff a small pay rise.
- The committee refused to agree to the proposed amendments until further environmental impact studies were conducted by independent experts.

## Pitfalls

- Not "I agree to your opinion." but "I agree with your opinion." — use 'with' for shared opinions and 'to' for accepting requests or plans.

## Usage notes

- followed by a noun or an infinitive verb; implies a response to an external proposal.
- Teaching tip: contrast 'agree to' (accepting a proposal) with 'agree with' (sharing an opinion or being compatible with something).
