Updated: 2026-04-24

## Definition

to invite someone to come to your house for a visit.

For teachers: to extend an informal invitation to a person to visit one's residence for a social purpose.

## Examples

- We should ask the neighbors over for coffee.
- Since they just moved in next door, I decided to ask them over for a quick drink.
- The host frequently asked over various local artists to discuss their work in a more intimate, domestic setting.

## Pitfalls

- Not "I asked over them." but "I asked them over." — when using a pronoun like 'them', it must go between the verb and the particle.

## Usage notes

- often used with 'for' to specify the activity, such as 'ask over for dinner'.
- Teaching tip: contrast with 'invite', which can be for any location; 'ask over' specifically implies the speaker's home.
