## Definition

a way of writing computer code so that a program can start a task and then move on to other work while it waits for that task to finish. This stops the software from freezing while it downloads data or saves a file.

For teachers: a design pattern in software development where operations are executed independently of the main program flow, allowing the system to remain responsive during long-running tasks. It relies on non-blocking execution and event loops to manage concurrent operations without requiring multiple CPU threads.

## Examples

- Asynchronous programming keeps the app responsive while it loads data.
- By using asynchronous programming, the web server can handle thousands of concurrent user requests without waiting for each database query to complete.
- The transition to asynchronous programming in modern web frameworks has significantly improved user experience by preventing the main thread from blocking during intensive input-output operations.

## Pitfalls

- Not "asynchronous programming makes code run faster" but "asynchronous programming makes code more efficient" — Asynchronous programming does not speed up individual tasks; it allows the system to handle other tasks while waiting, improving overall throughput rather than raw speed.
