## Definition

To complete the process of leaving a hotel by paying your bill and returning your key.

For teachers: To formally settle one's bill and depart from a hotel or other temporary accommodation.

## Examples

- We need to check out of the hotel by 11 AM.
- After a wonderful vacation, they checked out of the resort and headed to the airport.
- The delegation checked out of the five-star hotel under a cloud of media scrutiny following the summit's collapse.

## Pitfalls

- Not "We checked out the hotel at noon." but "We checked out of the hotel at noon." — The preposition 'of' is required to mean 'leave'; 'to check out something' means to look at or investigate it.

- The object is usually a hotel, motel, or other form of temporary lodging.
