## Definition

to pay your bill and leave a hotel or hospital at the end of your stay.

For teachers: to complete the formal departure process from a place of lodging or medical care; typically involves settling an account and returning keys.

## Examples

- We need to check out of the hotel by noon.
- After a week of recovery, the patient was finally healthy enough to check out of the hospital.
- The business travelers were forced to check out of their rooms early to catch the first flight back to London.

## Pitfalls

- Not "I checked out the hotel at 10 AM." but "I checked out of the hotel at 10 AM." — without 'of', the phrase means you inspected the hotel rather than left it after a stay.

## Usage notes

- usually followed by a noun phrase representing a place of temporary residence like a hotel or hostel.
- Teaching tip: contrast with 'check into' (the arrival process); note that 'check out' can also mean to look at something interesting, but 'check out of' is almost exclusively for leaving a place.
