## Definition

to include someone or something as part of a specific group.

For teachers: to include a person or thing within a particular category or group; often used in the passive voice to indicate status or membership.

## Examples

- I count him among my closest friends.
- The museum counts several rare paintings among its most valuable possessions.
- Though he was once a critic of the regime, he is now counted among its most loyal and vocal supporters.

## Pitfalls

- Not "I count among my friends him." but "I count him among my friends." — the object being categorized must come before the prepositional phrase starting with 'among'.

## Usage notes

- usually followed by a plural noun or a collective group.
- Teaching tip: this is a more formal way to say 'include' or 'consider as part of'; it often appears in the passive form 'to be counted among'.
