## Definition

a low platform at the front of a room. It is used to make a speaker or a guest of honor stand higher than everyone else so they are easy to see.

For teachers: a raised platform at the front of a hall or large room, typically used to accommodate speakers, dignitaries, or a throne.

## Examples

- The speaker stepped up onto the dais to begin the lecture.
- The wedding party sat at a long table on a decorated dais, looking out over the rest of the guests in the ballroom.
- From her position on the velvet-draped dais, the queen could survey the entire assembly of nobles as they entered the Great Hall to swear their allegiance.
