## Definition

the process of dividing a large set of information into smaller, more manageable pieces. This helps computers find and process information much faster.

For teachers: the process of dividing a large dataset into smaller, distinct parts to improve manageability, performance, or availability. Often involves distributing these segments across multiple storage nodes or database servers.

## Examples

- Data partitioning makes the database run much faster.
- The engineering team implemented data partitioning by region to ensure that users in Europe experienced lower latency when accessing their profiles.
- Effective data partitioning strategies must balance the need for horizontal scalability against the risk of creating hotspots where a single partition handles a disproportionate amount of the query load.

## Usage notes

- Often used in the context of database management and distributed systems.
