## Definition

to suddenly realize or understand something for the first time.

For teachers: to become evident or understood by someone, typically after a period of confusion or ignorance. The subject is usually the realization itself, while the person experiencing it is the object.

## Examples

- It finally dawned on me that I had lost my keys.
- As the meeting continued, it dawned on the manager that the project was far behind schedule.
- It only dawned on the researchers after months of failed experiments that the initial hypothesis was fundamentally flawed.

## Pitfalls

- Not "I dawned on the truth." but "The truth dawned on me." — the idea or fact is the subject that 'dawns', while the person is the object following 'on'.

## Usage notes

- almost always used with 'it' as a dummy subject followed by 'that' or a question word.
- Teaching tip: anchor the meaning to the literal 'dawn' (the sun rising) to show how an idea 'comes into the light' of the mind.
