## Definition

to be the right size or shape for a space, or to feel like you belong in a group.

For teachers: to be of the correct dimensions for a container or space; figuratively, to be socially compatible with a group or environment.

## Examples

- The key doesn't fit into the lock.
- It took a few weeks, but she finally started to fit into her new team at work.
- The architect struggled to ensure the modern glass structure would fit into the historic aesthetic of the surrounding neighborhood.

## Pitfalls

- Not "He fits into with the group." but "He fits into the group." — do not add 'with' after 'into'; the preposition 'into' already connects the verb to the group.

## Usage notes

- used both physically for objects and figuratively for social situations or abstract concepts.
- Teaching tip: distinguish between the literal physical sense and the social sense of 'belonging'; the social sense is often used with 'well' or 'perfectly'.
