## Definition

a person who works on or manages a farm. This word is quite old and you will mostly see it in history books or stories about the past.

For teachers: a farmer or a person in charge of a farm or granary. Historically associated with the American agrarian movement known as the Grange.

## Examples

- The granger worked the fields from sunrise to sunset.
- In the late 19th century, many a local granger joined the movement to protest against unfair railroad shipping rates.
- The novel depicts the life of a solitary granger who, despite the encroaching industrialisation of the valley, remains committed to traditional methods of crop rotation and animal husbandry.

## Usage notes

- Primarily historical or literary; rarely used in modern conversation except when referring to members of the Patrons of Husbandry.
