## Definition

to arrive or appear somewhere by chance, without planning to be there.

For teachers: to arrive or appear by chance at a particular place. The verb is intransitive and often functions as a narrative device to introduce a person or thing into a scene.

## Examples

- A bus happened along just as I was about to walk home.
- We were lost in the woods for hours until a local hiker happened along and showed us the way back.
- Just as the debate reached a stalemate, a junior clerk happened along with the missing files that resolved the entire dispute.

## Pitfalls

- Not "I happened along a small café." but "I happened upon a small café." — 'happen along' cannot take an object; use 'happen upon' when you find something.

## Usage notes

- This phrasal verb is intransitive, meaning it never takes a direct object.
- Teaching tip: Contrast this with 'happen upon' or 'come across', which require an object; 'happen along' focuses entirely on the act of appearing.
