## Definition

a type of system for managing website content that only stores the text and images without deciding how they look. It lets you send that content to many different places, like a phone app, a website, or a smart watch.

For teachers: a back-end-only content management system that acts as a content repository, making data accessible via an API for display on any device. It decouples the content storage from the presentation layer, allowing developers to build their own front-end interfaces.

## Examples

- Our team switched to a headless CMS to power our mobile app.
- By using a headless CMS, the marketing team can update product descriptions once and see the changes reflected instantly on the website and the retail kiosks.
- The architectural flexibility of a headless CMS allows enterprises to future-proof their digital assets, as content remains independent of the specific frameworks used for the user interface.

## Usage notes

- Often used in technical or web development contexts; the term 'headless' refers to the lack of a 'head' or front-end presentation layer.
