## Definition

adding more machines or servers to a system to help it handle more work. Instead of making one computer stronger, you share the tasks among many computers.

For teachers: the process of increasing the capacity of a system by adding more nodes or hardware instances to the existing pool. This approach distributes the workload across multiple machines rather than increasing the power of a single unit.

## Examples

- We used horizontal scaling to handle the increase in website visitors.
- When the app went viral, the engineering team implemented horizontal scaling by adding fifty new servers to the cluster.
