## Definition

a way of building software or systems where parts are organized in levels. Each level has a specific job and only talks to the levels directly above or below it.

For teachers: a structural pattern in software engineering where components are organized into hierarchical layers, each providing specific services to the layer above it. This design promotes separation of concerns and modularity by restricting dependencies between non-adjacent layers.

## Examples

- The app uses a layered architecture to keep the data separate from the design.
- By adopting a layered architecture, the development team was able to update the database system without changing any code in the user interface.
- In a classic four-tier layered architecture, the presentation layer remains decoupled from the data access layer, ensuring that changes in business logic do not necessitate a complete system overhaul.
