## Definition

protected from the wind or cold. You use this word to describe a place that feels warm because it is out of the breeze.

For teachers: sheltered from the wind; calm and warm. Primarily a regional or dialectal variation of 'lee', often used to describe the side of a hill or building protected from the elements.

## Examples

- We found a lew spot behind the wall to eat our lunch.
- The sheep huddled together in a lew corner of the field as the storm blew across the open moor.
- The garden was surprisingly productive for such a high altitude, largely because the thick stone walls kept the vegetable patches lew and protected from the biting northern winds.

## Usage notes

- Typically used as a predicative adjective after 'stay' or 'keep', or attributively before a noun.
