## Definition

a way of investing where you buy an asset, such as stocks or currency, because you expect its price to go up. If you hold this, you make money when the value increases.

For teachers: a market stance involving the purchase of a security, commodity, or currency with the expectation that its value will rise. The investor profits from a price increase and typically holds the asset for an extended period.

## Examples

- The investor decided to take a long position in tech stocks.
- After analyzing the company's strong quarterly earnings report, the fund manager opened a long position in their shares.
- Adopting a long position in emerging markets requires a high tolerance for short-term volatility in pursuit of significant capital appreciation over several years.

## Usage notes

- Commonly used with the verbs 'take', 'hold', or 'open'. It is the opposite of a 'short position'.
