## Definition

Stands for long-playing records. Large, flat records made of plastic that people use to play music. They were very popular before CDs and digital music became common.

For teachers: Abbreviation for long-playing records. Typically 12 inches in diameter and designed to be played at 33⅓ revolutions per minute. The term is the plural form of the initialism LP.

## Examples

- He collects old LPs from the 1970s.
- Many audiophiles prefer listening to LPs because they believe the analog sound is warmer than digital formats.
- The resurgence of vinyl has led many independent artists to release their new albums on LPs alongside digital streaming versions to satisfy collectors.

## Pitfalls

- Not "I bought three LP's" but "I bought three LPs" — Do not use an apostrophe to make an initialism plural; simply add a lowercase 's'.

## Usage notes

- Plural form of LP (Long Play); takes plural verb agreement.
