## Definition

the most important road in a city or town that connects different areas. It is usually wider and busier than the small streets that lead off it.

For teachers: a primary thoroughfare intended for heavy traffic and connecting major locations. Typically characterised by a higher speed limit and greater width than residential or side streets.

## Examples

- There is a noisy café right on the main road.
- If you follow the main road for three miles, you will eventually see the shopping centre on your left.
- The urban planning committee proposed a series of pedestrian crossings to manage the heavy congestion that frequently occurs where the main road intersects with the old market square.

## Usage notes

- Commonly used with the preposition 'on' to describe location or 'along' to describe movement.
