## Definition

a way of designing computer software where only the most important parts stay in the main core. Other tasks, like managing files or drivers, run as separate programs to make the system more stable.

For teachers: a software design pattern where the core operating system provides only minimal mechanisms — such as address space management and inter-process communication — while moving other services to user space. This modularity enhances system reliability and security by isolating failures within individual service components.

## Examples

- The team chose a microkernel architecture to improve the system's security.
- By using a microkernel architecture, the developers ensured that a crash in the file system driver would not bring down the entire operating system.
- The inherent performance overhead of message passing in a microkernel architecture is often offset by the increased modularity and the ability to hot-swap system services without a full reboot.

## Usage notes

- Often used as an uncountable concept in software engineering, but can be countable when referring to a specific implementation.
