## Definition

a field that is far away from a farm's main buildings. It is usually used for growing grass or letting animals eat.

For teachers: a field situated at a distance from the main farmstead or farm buildings. Often used for grazing or hay production rather than intensive cultivation.

## Examples

- The sheep are grazing in the outfield today.
- The farmer decided to leave the outfield fallow this season to let the soil recover.
- Because the outfield was located on the far side of the ridge, it was primarily reserved for hardy livestock that required less frequent supervision.

## Usage notes

- Commonly used in British and Commonwealth agricultural contexts.
