## Definition

something that grows or develops out of something else — like a new branch on a tree, or a new idea that comes from an older situation.

For teachers: a development or consequence that arises naturally from a prior condition, process, or system. Also refers to a physical projection growing outward from a main body, such as a shoot or appendage.

## Examples

- The new park is an outgrowth of local protests.
- The community garden started as an outgrowth of neighbours sharing seeds and tools during lockdown.
- Critics viewed the movement less as a sudden break than as the logical outgrowth of decades of quiet dissatisfaction with centralized planning.
