## Definition

an area of land at the bottom of a mountain range. It is usually a flat or hilly place that sits between the mountains and the lower plains.

For teachers: a gentle slope leading from the base of mountains to a region of flat land. Often used as a geographical descriptor for the plateau region between the Atlantic coastal plain and the Appalachian Mountains.
