## Definition

to put food onto a plate so it is ready to be served. You use this when you finish cooking and want to make the meal look nice for your guests.

For teachers: to arrange food on a plate or plates prior to service. This phrasal verb often implies a focus on presentation or the final stage of food preparation in a culinary context.

## Examples

- The chef is ready to plate up the main course now.
- Once the steak has rested for five minutes, you can plate up the vegetables and serve the meal.
- The head chef watched closely as the trainees began to plate up the delicate appetizers, ensuring each garnish was positioned with surgical precision.

## Pitfalls

- Not "He plated up of the pasta." but "He plated up the pasta." — the verb is transitive and takes a direct object without the preposition 'of'.

## Usage notes

- the object (the food) can come between 'plate' and 'up' or after the whole phrase.
- Teaching tip: this phrase is very common in cooking shows; contrast it with 'dish up', which is more casual and less focused on presentation.
