## Definition

a set of rules and words that people use to write instructions for a computer. It allows humans to tell a machine exactly what to do using specific code.

For teachers: a formal system of rules and syntax used to give instructions to a computer. These systems allow for the creation of software through the translation of human-readable logic into machine-executable code.

## Examples

- Python is a very popular programming language for beginners.
- The developer chose a fast programming language to ensure the mobile app would run smoothly on older phones.
- Proficiency in at least one low-level programming language is often required for engineers working on hardware drivers where memory management and execution speed are critical factors.

## Usage notes

- Commonly paired with 'in' when describing the medium of a task (e.g., 'written in a programming language').
