## Definition

to repair and improve a ship, building, or machine with new parts so you can use it again.

For teachers: to restore and re-equip a vessel, building, or machine with new fittings or parts for continued use.

## Examples

- We refit our kitchen with new cupboards and lights.
- The ferry is out of service for two months while engineers refit its engines and cabins.
- After decades in storage, the historic sailing ship was towed to dry dock to be refitted with modern navigation systems while preserving its original wooden hull.

## Pitfalls

- Not "refited" but "refitted" — The final -t doubles in past forms: refit - refitted - refitting.

## Usage notes

- The verb is transitive and takes a direct object.
