## Definition

to cause something to happen or to have a specific final effect.

For teachers: to have a particular outcome or consequence; functions as a causative phrasal verb where the subject is the cause and the object is the effect.

## Examples

- The heavy rain will result in floods.
- A small mistake in the calculations can result in a huge loss for the company.
- The prolonged period of economic instability eventually resulted in a complete restructuring of the national banking system.

## Pitfalls

- Not "The fire resulted of a cigarette." but "The fire resulted in a disaster." — use 'in' for the outcome; 'from' is used for the cause.

## Usage notes

- the object is almost always a noun representing an outcome or a situation.
- Teaching tip: contrast with 'result from' to show the direction of cause and effect; 'result in' points forward to the consequence.
