## Definition

a special layer of software that helps different parts of a large computer program talk to each other safely and reliably. It handles the 'traffic' between these parts so the main code doesn't have to.

For teachers: a dedicated infrastructure layer for facilitating service-to-service communication between microservices, often using a sidecar proxy. It manages network functions like load balancing, encryption, and service discovery independently of the application code.
