## Definition

a device that you attach to a gun to make the sound of the shot much quieter. It is also used to describe a part of a car that makes the engine noise less loud.

For teachers: a device fitted to a firearm or internal combustion engine to reduce the noise of discharge or exhaust. Often used in the context of law enforcement or automotive engineering.

## Examples

- The police used a silencer to make the gunshots quieter.
- The mechanic replaced the old silencer to reduce the loud roar of the car's engine.
- While the silencer significantly dampened the acoustic signature of the weapon, it did not eliminate the muzzle flash entirely, which remained visible to the naked eye.
