## Definition

to express the thoughts, feelings, or wishes of another person or group.

For teachers: to act as a representative or spokesperson for another entity. Transitive — requires an object representing the person or group being represented.

## Examples

- I cannot speak for everyone, but I enjoyed the film.
- The lawyer was hired to speak for the family during the press conference.
- While the ambassador claims to speak for the entire nation, many citizens feel their specific concerns remain unaddressed.

## Pitfalls

- Not "I speak for my friend's opinion." but "I speak for my friend." — you speak for a person or group, not for their abstract noun or opinion directly.

## Usage notes

- often used in the negative to clarify that one is only expressing a personal opinion.
- Teaching tip: contrast with 'speak to' (addressing someone) or 'speak about' (discussing a topic); 'speak for' implies a transfer of agency or representation.
