## Definition

a tool in computer systems that manages a group of programs while keeping track of their unique data and identity. Unlike other groups where every program is the same, this one remembers which program is which even if they restart.

For teachers: a workload API object used to manage stateful applications, providing guarantees about the ordering and uniqueness of a set of pods. It maintains a sticky identity for each pod, ensuring that persistent storage and network identifiers remain consistent across restarts.

## Examples

- The database runs inside a stateful set to keep its data safe.
- When deploying a distributed database, the engineer chose a stateful set to ensure each node retained its specific data volume after a reboot.
- Unlike a deployment, a stateful set assigns a persistent identifier to each pod, which is essential for applications requiring stable network identities or ordered deployment and scaling.

## Usage notes

- Commonly used in the context of Kubernetes and container orchestration; often contrasted with 'deployments' or 'stateless' applications.
