## Definition

a way of writing computer code where you must decide the type of data — like a number or text — before the program runs. This helps catch mistakes early because the computer checks your work as you write it.

For teachers: a programming language feature where variable types are checked at compile-time rather than at runtime. Requires explicit or inferred type declarations that remain fixed throughout the execution of the program.

## Examples

- Static typing helps developers find bugs before they launch their apps.
- Many large-scale software projects prefer static typing because it makes the code easier to maintain and prevents common data errors.
- While dynamic languages offer rapid prototyping, static typing provides a layer of formal verification that ensures internal consistency across complex, multi-module architectures.

## Usage notes

- Typically used in the context of computer science and software engineering.
