## Definition

having the most power, energy, or physical ability compared to everyone or everything else in a group. You use this to describe the person or thing that wins in a test of power.

For teachers: possessing the greatest physical power, durability, or intensity within a specific group or set. The superlative form of 'strong'.

## Examples

- He is the strongest person in our gym.
- The strongest candidate for the job has both the right experience and a great attitude.
- Engineers selected the strongest alloy available to ensure the bridge could withstand the extreme pressure of the mountain winds during the winter season.

## Pitfalls

- Not "the most strongest" but "the strongest" — One-syllable adjectives form the superlative by adding '-est' — using 'most' as well is a double superlative error.

## Usage notes

- The superlative form of the adjective 'strong'; almost always preceded by the definite article 'the'.
