## Definition

a smaller part of a larger computer network. It helps organize traffic and keep data moving efficiently by grouping connected devices together.

For teachers: a logically visible subdivision of an IP network. Dividing a network into two or more networks improves routing efficiency and enhances security by isolating traffic within specific segments.

## Examples

- The office computers are all on the same subnet.
- The network administrator assigned the accounting department to a separate subnet to ensure their financial data remained isolated from the rest of the company.
- By implementing a custom subnet mask, the engineer was able to partition the existing infrastructure into smaller, more manageable segments, thereby reducing broadcast storms and improving overall latency.

## Usage notes

- Commonly used in technical contexts; often paired with 'mask' to describe how the network is divided.
