## Definition

a large circular machine that speeds up tiny particles to almost the speed of light. Scientists use the powerful light it makes to study materials, proteins, and other very small things.

For teachers: a cyclic particle accelerator in which charged particles are kept on a circular path by magnetic fields synchronized to their increasing energy. Typically built as a large storage ring producing intense X-ray beams for research in physics, materials science, and structural biology.

## Examples

- Scientists use the synchrotron to study new materials.
- The research team booked time at the synchrotron to examine the crystal structure of a new battery material.
- By circulating electrons for hours at nearly light speed, the synchrotron generates X-ray beams bright enough to reveal atomic arrangements that conventional laboratory sources cannot resolve.
