## Definition

a short way of saying 'that will'. You use it to talk about what will happen in the future or what is likely to be true.

For teachers: a contraction of the demonstrative pronoun 'that' and the modal verb 'will'. Used to indicate future certainty or to express a logical consequence.

## Examples

- Don't worry, that'll be fine.
- If we leave now, that'll give us enough time to catch the train before it departs.
- While some critics argue the policy is too strict, proponents believe that'll be the only way to ensure long-term stability in the region.

## Pitfalls

- Not "that'll of been" but "that'll have been" — Learners sometimes confuse the sound of 'have' in a contraction with the preposition 'of'.

## Usage notes

- Primarily used in spoken English and informal writing; the apostrophe replaces the letters 'wi'.
