## Definition

in, at, or to that place. You use it to point to a spot that is not where you are right now.

For teachers: at, in, or to that place or position. Often used to indicate a location previously mentioned or easily identified by the listener.

## Examples

- Put the box over there on the table.
- We visited the new museum last week and spent several hours there looking at the exhibits.
- While the capital city offers numerous cultural attractions, many travelers prefer to stay there only briefly before heading into the more scenic rural provinces.

## Pitfalls

- Not "Their is a cat in the garden." but "There is a cat in the garden." — Learners frequently confuse the adverb 'there' with the possessive adjective 'their' or the contraction 'they're'.

## Usage notes

- Often functions as an expletive or dummy subject ('there is/are') to introduce new information.
